Glasgow City Council

Glasgow City Council Chooses Sysload via PTC software.

Glasgow City Council is the biggest local council in Scotland , serving a population of almost 612,000. IT Support is delivered through a combination of corporate ICT and local department IT support. The IT infrastructure looked after by corporate ICT includes Windows, Netware, and various UNIX variants such as Solaris, AI, Bull, HP-UX, Oracle and MS SQL Server, which are the predominant database management systems in the council.

Why performance management?

In 2000, the council decided that they needed a coordinated view of the health of the entire IT infrastructure, including servers, databases, and network equipment. It was also decided that a business-focuses solution was required that would allow support staff to identify what critical business applications were affected by IT problems. CA's Unicenter TNG framework was selected to accomplish this view. A small number of agents were also implemented to monitor the health and performance of core corporate systems.

“We were looking for 'best of breed' server performance and database monitoring solutions that would integrate directly into the existing framework. SYSLOAD was chosen for server performance following an evaluation process where it compared favorably, in both technical and financial terms, to the other products that we looked at.” said Elizabeth MacDonald, Operations Manager at Glasgow City Council

More recently, the council embarked on an exercise to expand the coverage of monitored servers and databases. The council re-evaluated solutions using selection criteria that included ease of implementation, functionality, ongoing maintenance costs, integration into Unicenter, and price. Sysload was the preferred solution and implementation work started in May 2002.
